Summit with Me
Summit with Me is a blog that was first created in hopes of keeping all the supporters of Andrew Goodwin’s Summit for Someone climbs updated. Not only is this blog used as a newsfeed for the supporters of the 2010 adventures, but it will also provide advice and education for trips, equipment, and programs. The authors of this blog have the knowledge and understanding of the outdoors AND they also share the passion. Passion is what unites us.
Backpacker Magazine’s ‘Summit For Someone’
Backpacker Magazine’s ‘Summit for Someone’ is a series of benefit climbs owned, operated by, and to benefit Big City Mountaineers, a recreational mentoring program for at-risk teens. Each SFS participant commits to fundraising and training for his/her specific benefit climb. Now in its 5th year, SFS is the #1 mountaineering fundraiser in the country, climbing 17 of the country’s premire mountains.
Big City Mountaineers
Big City Mountaineers(BCM) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit which provides a recreational mentoring program for at-risk teens. The mission of BCM is to enhance the lies of under-resourced urban teens through transformative outdoor experiences. Summit for Someone is the primary fundraiser for BCM’s programs, which show teens a different perspective by taking them into wilderness areas in California, Colorado, Minnesota, and the Pacific Northwest. They provide a on-to-one ratio of adult volunteers as positive role models in each program. The core BCM program, RELATE (Recreational Experiences Linking Adults & Teens Environmentally) takes inner city ids on week long backpacking trips. Money raised by SFS participants directly increases the number of teens we can take out each summer on RELATE backpacking trips.
In 2008, funds raised by Summit for Someone helped provide 2,500 program days to BCM teens from youth agencies across four regions. BCM’s partner youth agencies include:
* A Kidz Hope
* Big Brothers Big Sisters Portland
* Boys & Girls Club Seattle – Southwest Branch
* Chicago Youth Program
* Christopher House
* CityWILD
* CO Youth At Risk
* College Track
* Colorado I have a Dream

Hello friends,
I am back from Chile and I had a great time paddling the entire trip and shooting an amazing big wave event.
Never got smaller then double overhead and most days were solid 3-4 times over head, with a few bigger days.
The paddle event was a solid 20' by the end of day and it was a great kick off for the Big Wave World Tour!
The next day, I paddeled into a meaty one off the Morros (top of point) and rode it all the way to the beach and
jumped off my board on the sand. That was an amazingly beautiful and very long ride for sure.
Basically like three Rincons put together on the best day in 5 years w/ as little as 4 guys out!!!!!!
Lots of inside stand up tubes and many great moments.
Left my big wave board and tow board down at a friends house. Plan on going back very soon with a couple more
paddle boards. Lots of more swell on the way! Hope to get some big tow days in so long as that swell comes.
Earthquakes every day...Felt more quakes in two weeks there then my entire life in Cali.....
Here are some shots I took.......

The Az.Hi.az.I.am moto "Leading the Aerial Revolution" was created in 1997 to help combat the lack of acknowledgment by the professional surfing community that maneuvers above the lip (aka AIRS) are actually where the most progression is coming from. Az.Hi.az.I.aM founder Mike "Lopaka" Jones did 2 years on the California surf pro tour and realized that his Aerial Approach was looked down upon by the judges at the professional events he entered. Seeing this backwards bias in surfing, Mike decided to finish college (he now has a degree in Psychology from Cal Poly S.L.O)and start a company completely entrenched in the Art and evolution of HUMAN FLIGHT: Az.Hi.az.I.aM was born and still remains as one of the only brands that supports all sports that involve Aerial Antics. From Bull riders to Pole Vaulters to Base Jumping and Surfing Az.HI.az.I.aM is there! 13 years after the Az.Hi.az.I.aM idea was born, The New York times does a write up on the matter and included Aerial masters such as Christian Fletcher and Dane Reynolds. Click the "AIRS?" link in the top menu bar to read the NY Times article.
Az.Hi.az.I.aM Staff Photographer Mike Jones collected a heavy overtime bonus check for the 2010 Winter El Nino season. Not only did the local crew make international surf history by legitimately scoring 3 of the biggest barrels of the year (VaN Curazza, Dustin Ray and Christian Enns) and earning entries to the 2010 Billabong XXL Awards. Staff Photographer M.Jones went the extra step and also timed a swell perfectly to shoot the infamous Pe'ahi (aka Jawz) in all it's glory and scored another 5 Billabong XXL entries for: Ian Walsh x2, Dave Rastavich x2, Pato, and Andrea Moller. "I thought I was supposed to shoot from a ski, but it never showed up at the Gulch. So, I went and Rambo'ed down the muddy cliffs to score a decent angle." And score he did; earning NINE entries total into the Billabong XXL big wave awards. We would like to thank Nectar Ales for sponsoring this portion of Azhiaziam.com. All photos by Mike Jones /Azhiaziam.com *The only photographer to get more entries than Mr. Jones in the divisions he submitted for was none other than legendary Eric Aeder, who shot from a helicopter and nabbed 11 images for the XXL. Onoe of the World's finest photographers Tim Mckenna nailed a total of 8 XXL entries.
VAN AGAIN. Early morning backdoor.
The Feb 27th 2010 tsunami as seen from the Morro Bay Harbor Entrance. What you will see is drastic tidal changes, bouys that are usually free floating in open water are pinned sideways as the tide rushed out dropping the entire water level down several feet. Once the ocean sucked out, a surge came in and quickly filled the entire bay back up. all photos by Mike Jones mike@azhiaziam.com 805-771-0199 http://www.azhiaziam.comTSUNAMI FEB 2010

TAX MUCH??? WHY DO PAY TO LIVE IN THE USSA???
Charley Reese has been a journalist for 49 years.
545 PEOPLE--By Charlie Reese
Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them..
Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?
Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?
You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does..
You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.
You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.
You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.
You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.
One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.
I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.
I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.
Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.
What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits..... The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.
The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? Nancy Pelosi. She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.
If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.
If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red ..
If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ , it's because they want them in IRAQ
If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.
There are no insoluble government problems.
Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.
Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.
They, and they alone, have the power..
They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.
Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees...
We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

What you do with this article now that you have read it......... Is up to you.
This might be funny if it weren't so darned true.
Be sure to read all the way to the end:
Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table,
At which he's fed.
Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.
Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts
Anyway!
Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.
Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.
Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think..
Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears.
Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.
Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.
When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.
Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid...
Put these words
Upon his tomb,
Taxes drove me
to my doom...'
When he's gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply
The inheritance tax..

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY? Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, & our nation was the most prosperous in the world. We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.
What in the hell happened? Can you spell 'politicians?'
I hope this goes around THE USA at least 100 times!!! YOU can help it get there!!!

The boat that broke down and the crew that was rescued, TWICE!
What seemed to be a good idea turned into near tragedy on Feb. 13th 2010, when Chris Ward and Dave Langer decided to take a 13 ft Sea Pro boat out the Morro Bay Harbor in 20 ft + surf. The Harbor, at high tide on a glassy day, is doable. This is what it was like when Wardo's boat left the harbor, non life threatening. Captain Wardo had a great day of surf at a local break and everyone was stoked. As the day progressed the tide dropped out, the wind came up to gale force levels and a looming fog bank was heading right for the boat load of surfers. Everyone decided it was time to leave and get back to the Harbor. As the jet ski crew entered the harbor to make sure everyone made it in ok, we quickly realized some people were missing. We sat with the Coast Guard and Harbor Patrol, watching 25 ft sets close out the entire entrance. Not good. Troy Leage, Christian Enns and I (Mike Jones) decided to head back out to sea to look for the missing boat. This was some of the most treacherous waters I have ever been in, huge chop from the wind and massive waves capping way out to sea... Chris headed out to sea, where we could see Don Curry and Ed Guzman motoring around. I stayed a few hundred yards off the Jetties at the entrance for about 15 min, and realized I was almost out of gas...it was really sketchy, I had lost sight of everyone and I did not want to be another statistic so I headed back to the harbor entrance and went in. Once I got back to the docks, I started getting calls about what went down right after, I cam in...
Here is what KSBY NEWS had to say about it:
Photo Courtesy of: Geri Lanier
Some scary moments in Morro Bay Saturday when large waves caused a Coast Guard boat to flip.
Witnesses say the Coast Guard cutter was towing a skiff boat back to shore when it got stuck in some large wave sets.
The strong waves then flipped the cutter with three of the skiff passengers on board.
"Basically they ran down the face, hit the trough, the bow just started submerging in the trough of the wave and the stern just completely came over the bow," said Ray Savoie, who witnessed the incident. "I mean they did a full forward flip with a half roll."
"We came up, we righted ourselves, and my friends were gone, they were gone," said David Langer, who was a passenger on the skiff boat. "I looked and there they were in the ocean looking up."
No one was hurt but the Coast Guard cutter was damaged in the incident.
The passengers on the skiff boat say they take full responsibility for what happened because they should not have been out on the water, in the skiff boat, in the first place.
SURFER MAG BLOG ABOUT THE EVENT:
Don L. Curry helped rescue these guys, and had this to say about the News coverage of the incident: I am shocked to read the total lack of detail in this rescue event that occured on 2/13/10 in Morro Bay. As a K38 certified PWC rescue boat operator, my training is the reason why there were no fatalities. I have to agree with the comment that the skiff should have been left at sea, towing it into Morro Bay harbor with 20' waves was not the right ... See Morecall and is what ultimatly caused the 47' rescue boat to capsize. Me and my partner stayed with the vessel in distress from the time of engine failure to following the Coast Guard into the harbor and had the presence of mind to risk our lives to rescue the two ejected passengers and narrowly escape the 20' wave that was within seconds and feet of us being another statistic to the infamous Morro Bay harbor opening. A little photo credit seems kinda silly but still valid in terms of this journalistic attempt to tell the news.
Here is a few shots of a previous day with the COast Guard and the Morro Bay HArbor!
